Everyone wants a piece of the pie. Either you’re in a band, an artist, or manager and you’re looking out for yourself or your project. You can share and take all the resources you want but in the end when you have the opportunity to “get ahead” you’re looking out for “number one.” It’s, after all, the “American Way.” Let’s face the facts. We live in a country that was founded on capitalism. Not socialism. The pilgrims and conquistadors didn’t come here to make friends and for equal opportunity. They were opportunists. They came for the economic taking. Whether you like it or not, your band is a product and should be handled as a business. This may or may not be new news to you. It’s tough being an indie (independent band). Get ready for people to stab you in the back and to be under-appreciated. It seems that’s the ugly nature of the music business. Up until now I would say that’s our experience. I’ve heard other bands say we’re great, and other say we are the band everyone loves to hate (so be it)! Bands we’ve shared the stage with have insulted us publicly that it’s almost uncanny how articulate they are. But at least there is controversy around us. I would rather be dangerous creatively than safe. When you’re in a band, even your inner-circle of friends may treat you like the red-headed-step-child. Getting put on opening slots even after proving you are clearly not an opening band. The other band is going to be looking out for themselves first. Always. It’s human nature. Not getting invited to play shows, or getting invited to play shows only to discover it was just an after thought. Is it that other bands don’t want you to give them a run for their money? Or is it just coincidence? Then there are clicks. Stay away from those. Although bands don’t want to admit it, they’re cliquish. Just when I started to think all you have to do is scratch someones back and they’ll scratch yours….well they missed a spot.

Every day I wake up and this comes up in my head,

To be a musician is a gift yet it can become a nightmare of sorts,

As I look at my life I have yet to say I have successfully launched a career that can completely sustain my way of life, my habits, and anything in between.

A musician’s life isn’t easy as you have to sacrifice a lot, you loose more than you gain in the process even though the future is uncertain, this way of life calls for socializing with lots of people as you are required to know people so they can pay some attention to your work or they may know someone who knows someone else so called important or with weight in the industry that may help you unlock that door, you are definitely required to do foot work such as passing out flyers at shows, venues, and anywhere that can grab people’s attention, yes we have to be dedicated to it.

Nowadays of course we have such other mediums to exploit, such as the internet which does help musicians to promote and present their music even to people from countries you would have never imagined before, The music industry has suffered in part of sales because of this thing we call the internet but it also has benefited independent bands to launch their music, some of those Independent bands are competitive with the heavyweights in the industry, sure sales may not be so high but then who actually made money on the sales? The record labels of course.

Musicians have more of an opportunity to control their product, they are able to keep the rights to the music compared to the early 2000’s and before where musicians didn’t make much on such and at the end of a contract they would end up in debt, doesn’t sound like the glamorized rock life people think of does it? A lot of bands we hear or have heard of back then did end up on debt, some of them where able to release themselves of such by a breakup which also a lot of times included loss of rights to all the material they have created, or they where at the end successful that they ended up paying all their debts which happens less than people think, even The Beatles didn’t make much when they were together beign the most successful band in the history of music, does this way of life still sound so glamorized? Don’t think so but we love to do what we do.

So the moment you meet a musician, appreciate what they are trying to do, don’t criticize them as they are only trying to cultivate something that has been important to human kind for ages,.

Music, yes the lovely form of art that has captivated people’s hearts, minds and souls for centuries, the wonderful sounds we hear at any moment and time of the day, the sounds that either ease our pain or deepens it more, that which uplifts us, fills us with rage or philosophical ideas, the sounds that makes our bodies move, that introduces us to love, whatever the reason may be remember always that what you are hearing was cultivated by a certain someone or band from their hearts expressing their current emotions to people.

“That which cannot be expressed with words, can be expressed emotionally with music”….

Eduardo “Lalo” Rodriguez

We’ve had the great opportunity to be on the last 2 of Local 782’s compilations. The second of which was just released last night. The cd contains 14 tracks from San Antonio artists. We had the opportunity to start off the CD release festivities at the first of 3 nights celebrating the cd. We played at Tonic on a great bill featuring Minimum Wage, Kick It!, and Egshan who all played great sets. The response was great for the entire evening and there was a great feeling of accomplishment for everyone. We Want to thanks everyone who came out and supported this cd as well as supported us. We met some new people last night and we hope we will keep seeing your faces at upcoming shows. Here’s 2 videos from last night’s show. Thanks to Alex and Jorge from Pop Pistol for helping us capture these moments on film.

Tuesday we opened up for a brilliant band called Nico Vega from L.A. It was at the Ten Eleven which is a dark and intimate place, honestly for some reason I’ve had the most fun playing there. First Ballroom Catastrophe from S.A. kicked off the show with their quirky dark, synth rock-the show went fantastically, everyone was “on” from the first beat, I know we didn’t miss a beat. It was about 120 degrees in there because I was sweating profusely, beads of sweat dripping onto my guitar as I played it, hair growing wild and wet, the guitar didn’t play me. Jackee was jumping around getting into it. And Rickey our new drummer’s first show with us- calm and collected – the glue that kept us all so together. And of course David, his meticulous, subtle but deadly guitar playing- shredding away. Jaime and his effortless rock stance and hair always blowing in the wind even when there’s no wind (band inside joke) – was nervous because Nico Vega is one of his favorite bands and he knew they would be watching. I’ve never seen him that nervous when he talked to the audience. I started to use my digital delay pedal that night that I bought a few years back, and it sounded cool but there are some minor technical difficulties with that i need to adjust-digressing-Then a few songs into our set I see Richy of Nico Vega in the crowd rocking out to one of our songs. I got a little shy and went inside the music for a bit. After the show Nico Vega’s drummer said we had an awesome set. Later we talked to Richy the guitarist and Aja the singer. They were all so cool and down to earth. Aja said she liked us and Richy commented on mine and Jackee’s harmonies, he said we rocked, and sounded like “one”….which we did that night. Then Nico Vega went on and played an amazing set. the drummer set up his drum set to the right of the stage at an angle, Richy and Aja are in the center. Aja turns into cat woman once the music starts and interacts closely with the audience. climbs on walls….. Richy is just a bad ass guitarist. They played an exceptionally organic set, nothing was fake, they didn’t care that it was a hole in the wall they were playing. They were just happy to be giving their music. The way I think it should be. There are few bands that want to give something, most are trying to gain something. Usually you can see through those. But not that night there was a whole lotta love making.
